Why have a FibroScan?

Liver disease often develops silently, long before you feel unwell.

Liver disease is becoming increasingly common and often develops silently over many years. Most people with early liver disease feel completely well and may have no symptoms until the condition has become more advanced.

Early diagnosis provides the opportunity to identify the underlying cause, prevent further liver damage and, in many cases, improve or even reverse early liver disease. FibroScan gives valuable information about the health of your liver within minutes.

Unlike a conventional ultrasound scan, FibroScan measures:

Liver stiffness

Reflects the amount of liver scarring, a key indicator of liver health.

Liver fat

Helps assess fatty liver disease (MASLD) and overall liver function.

Simple, painless and non-invasive. The examination usually takes only a few minutes and requires no needles or sedation.

Why combine it with a specialist consultation?

A scan result is only one part of the picture.

The same reading can have very different implications depending on your medical history, blood tests, medications and individual risk factors. For this reason, every FibroScan is combined with a specialist hepatology consultation.

Rather than simply receiving a number, you will receive a clear explanation of what your results mean, whether any further investigations are required and, most importantly, what should happen next. Our aim is to give every patient confidence, clarity and a personalised plan.

Understanding your care

What happens after your scan

A normal FibroScan is reassuring and often indicates that there is no significant liver scarring.

If early liver scarring is identified, the priority is understanding why it has developed. Common causes include fatty liver disease (MASLD), alcohol-related liver disease, viral hepatitis and other liver conditions. Early liver disease can often be improved through appropriate treatment, lifestyle changes and ongoing support.

If more advanced liver scarring or cirrhosis is identified, specialist assessment and follow-up become particularly important. Dr Fateen will guide your ongoing management and, where appropriate, arrange continued care either privately or through NHS specialist services.

At Thames Valley FibroScan, we look beyond the scan result. Liver health is influenced by many factors, including weight, nutrition, physical activity, alcohol, diabetes, cholesterol, medications and other medical conditions.

Your appointment therefore includes a broad review of your overall liver health and the factors that may be contributing to liver damage. You will receive practical and personalised advice on areas such as nutrition, weight management, physical activity and alcohol consumption, alongside any medical investigations or treatment that may be required.

Our aim is not simply to provide a FibroScan result, but to help you understand your liver health and develop a realistic plan to improve and protect it.

Whether you are seeking reassurance, investigating abnormal liver blood tests or looking for expert advice about fatty liver disease, Thames Valley FibroScan provides rapid access to specialist liver assessment.

Our aim is simple: to help you understand your liver health, identify any problems early and give you a clear plan for protecting your liver for the future.
